John Fairlie
Bassoonist
John Fairlie comes to us from New Orleans, where he had served as both Executive and Music Director of the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra (GNOYO) for the past twelve years. A founder of GNOYO, he helped build that organization from 65 students in 2 orchestras to over 250 students in five orchestras, a summer festival, and a chamber program. An active performer, John also was a member of New Orleans's professional symphony, the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) for 16 years, playing bassoon, contrabassoon, and saxophone. Currently John serves as Executive & Music Director of the Boulder Youth Symphony and is the Executive Director and Principal Bassoonist of the Steamboat Springs Orchestra. John received his Master's Degree in woodwinds and conducting from the University of North Texas, studying with renowned conductor and violinist Anshel Brusilov. Mr. Fairlie has worked continuously in professional orchestras and jazz ensembles since 1977 in Ohio, Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana before coming to Colorado in 2006. He has worked extensively with young students, both as a private instructor and for groups ranging from grade school bands to high school honor bands and orchestras. He has taught at the university level at the University of Texas, Permian Basin, and at the University of New Orleans. John and his wife, violinist and teacher Mary Anne Fairlie, have two children.
